Alekos Fassianos Survey Opens at National Gallery in Corfu
The world of Alekos Fassianos, suffused with light, memory, and everyday poetry, is the subject of a major exhibition this summer in Corfu. The National Gallery Annexe presents “Alekos Fassianos. Under the summer sun,” a survey of work by one of Greece’s most celebrated artists, running from 26 June 2026 to 11 January 2027. “I paint what touches me, what I feel about life, very simply,” Fassianos once remarked. This ethos informed his signature motifs, from golden horsemen and languid nudes to his singular focus on the poetry of small, ordinary moments. The show gathers 46 works spanning nearly six decades of his career.
The world of Alekos Fassianos, a realm of light, memory, and the poetry of the everyday, unfolds this summer in Corfu. The National Gallery Annexe is host to the exhibition “Alekos Fassianos. Under the summer sun,” an extensive presentation of work by one of Greece’s most recognisable and admired artists. From 26 June 2026 until 11 January 2027, the public can explore a creative journey spanning nearly six decades, capturing the enduring appeal of his visual language.
“I paint what touches me, what I feel about life, very simply,” Fassianos himself once stated. This apparent simplicity, which contains profound depth and feeling, is evident in every piece. Golden horsemen, pairs of lovers, languid women, and nudes bathed in light are all fragments of a dream that the artist rendered into image. His interest in “the small, insignificant events” was his strength: an ability to elevate the poetry hidden within the most humble moments.
The exhibition, held in the Kastellino building in Kato Korakiana, brings together 46 representative works, including oil paintings, acrylics, and engravings. Drawn from the collection of the National Gallery, The Alekos Fassianos Museum, and significant private collections, the selection underscores the breadth and importance of the project. It reveals both his consistent dedication to a personal mythology and the discreet evolution of his style over time.
Under the general direction of Syrago Tsiara and curated by Efi Agathonikou, Director of Collections at the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum, the display highlights Fassianos’s thematic and aesthetic preoccupations. The architectural design by Irini-Dafni Sapka creates a fitting environment for this sensual yet spiritual world to emerge, offering visitors a comprehensive experience.
