TAKIS (Vassilakis Panagiotis)
1925 — 2019
Takis, born Panagiotis Vassilakis, was born in Athens in 1925. A self-taught artist, he began his career in the 1940s, initially experimenting with clay and plaster. Post-war Athens, with its social and political turmoil, shaped his early artistic thinking, leading him to a search for new expressive means.
In the mid-1950s, Takis moved to Paris, where he came into contact with the avant-garde of the era and began to develop his characteristic artistic language. Influenced by science and technology, he started incorporating magnets, electromagnets, and other mechanical elements into his works, creating the famous “Signals” and “Magnetic Fields”. His works were not static objects, but dynamic compositions that interacted with space and time, often producing sound and movement.
Takis's reputation spread rapidly, and his work was exhibited in major galleries and museums worldwide, such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He was a member of the New Realists group and participated in important exhibitions, such as Documenta in Kassel. His contribution to kinetic art and art of technology was decisive, opening new avenues for artistic expression.
Takis returned to Greece in the 1980s and founded the Research Center for Art and Sciences (K.E.T.E.) in Gerovouno, Attica, a space dedicated to the research and dissemination of the relationship between art, science, and technology. The artist passed away in 2019, leaving behind a rich and pioneering body of work that continues to inspire and provoke thought.
