Sotiris Sorogas was born in Athens in 1936. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1954 to 1959, under the tutelage of Yannis Moralis. From 1964 to 1970, he taught drawing and color at the Department of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and in 1970, he was elected professor at the NTUA School of Architecture, a position he held until 2003.
Sorogas's work is characterized by a profound philosophical approach, focusing on themes such as decay, memory, death, and human destiny. He frequently uses wood, either as a material for the surfaces of his works or as a central motif, symbolizing transience and resilience over time. His color palette is usually limited to earthy tones, gray, and black, enhancing the sense of austerity and introspection.
He has held numerous solo exhibitions in Greece and abroad and has participated in significant group exhibitions and international events, such as the Venice Biennale. His work has been recognized with many awards and distinctions, and his pieces are found in important public and private collections, including the National Gallery.
Sotiris Sorogas is considered one of the most important representatives of contemporary Greek painting, with a distinct and recognizable voice that continues to inspire and provoke thought.
