SKOULAKIS Dimosthenis

1939 — 2014

Dimosthenis Skoulakis was born in Athens in 1939. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1957 to 1962, with Yannis Moralis and Giorgos Mavroidis in painting, and Konstantinos Grammatopoulos in printmaking. From an early age, he showed a strong inclination towards social and political critique, which permeated his entire body of work. His artistic style is characterized by an expressive realism, often with elements of satire and the grotesque. He used vibrant colors and dynamic compositions to depict the distortions and contradictions of contemporary society. In addition to painting, he extensively engaged in printmaking, book illustration, and political cartooning, publishing his works in newspapers and magazines. Skoulakis presented his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, including exhibitions in Athens, Thessaloniki, Paris, and Berlin. He participated in significant events, such as the Alexandria Biennale. His work is held in public and private collections, including the National Gallery. Dimosthenis Skoulakis left behind a rich body of work that serves as a timeless testimony to the social and political ferment in Greece. His keen observation and his ability to capture human weaknesses and social injustices with biting humor make him one of the most important Greek artists with a strong social conscience.
