PRASSINOS Mario

1916 — 1985

Mario Prassinos was born in Constantinople in 1916 to Greek parents. His family moved to France in 1922, where he spent most of his life. He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he initially focused on sculpture, but soon turned to painting and engraving. His early work was influenced by surrealism, while he later developed a personal abstract style. His artistic style evolved towards abstraction, yet maintained references to the natural world. His works often depict landscapes, trees, and organic forms, transformed into dynamic compositions with vibrant colors and expressive brushstrokes. He was also a prolific engraver, creating an extensive body of work in woodcut and lithography. His work is characterized by a deep connection to nature and an introspective, poetic mood. Prassinos participated in many important exhibitions worldwide, including the Venice and São Paulo Biennales. His works are held in significant museum collections, such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His contribution to art was recognized with various distinctions, including the Légion d'honneur. Mario Prassinos left behind a rich and diverse body of work that combines his Greek origins with the French artistic tradition. His legacy lies in his ability to transform the observation of nature into a personal, abstract language, offering a unique perspective on modernism.
