Maria Pop was born in Athens in 1925. A characteristic figure of the generation of naïve painters, Maria Pop was the daughter of the Spanish violinist and conductor Joseph Bustinduy, who served as director and conductor of the Athens State Orchestra. Her sister was the award-winning novelist and translator Ioulia Iatridi. She was married to the Athenian lawyer Konstantinos Pop, son of the prominent journalist and publisher of the newspaper "Athenai."
In Aegina, she maintained her distinctive and lushly planted house in the Faros area, where she occasionally hosted significant figures, such as the writer M. Karagatsis. Metaxourgeio, Monastiraki, Kastella, Hydra, Nafplio, and, of course, her beloved Aegina—neoclassical buildings and traditional structures, cafes, forgotten alleys beneath the Acropolis, old houses with their courtyards and trees—are captured in the works of Maria Pop. Furthermore, painted memories from her travels to Spain, her second homeland, are also depicted.
She studied music at the Athens Conservatoire and received a diploma in dramatic arts from the National Theatre School. In her works, she uses materials associated with traditional painting. She presented her work in solo exhibitions (Psychogos 1965, Thessaloniki Touring Club 1968, Astor 1971, Ora 1977, 1994, EM Gallery Volos 1981, Spanish Cultural Institute).
